What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a very effective way to replace one or more missing teeth. It is a post made of a specialized titanium alloy placed into the jawbone where the tooth's roots previously were. The body recognizes the implant's titanium surface as safe. The tissue and bone form a bond in a process called osseointegration. Once this fusion has been completed, the implant becomes the anchor for a crown, bridge, or denture.

We offer a variety of implant treatment choices, including:

Single Implant: To replace a missing tooth, a single implant post with a custom crown is available. We can provide a comfortable temporary crown or collaborate with your dentist for your permanent crown.

Implant-Supported Bridge: A bridge is an excellent option if you are missing two or more teeth in a row. Instead of altering healthy teeth, we place two implants to hold a custom prosthetic in place between them.

Implant-Supported Dentures: We can secure your partial or complete denture with implants to effectively restore your full smile. The dentures are custom-made to fill in spaces or replace an entire upper or lower arch. With the strategic placement of implant posts, your dentures are permanently attached.

All-On-4® Treatment: If you are missing all of your teeth on one arch or both, this technique offers an excellent solution. A full denture can be attached immediately using only four implant posts. This option can provide a fast, affordable solution if you have low bone density.

Bone Grafts: We can perform this treatment if you have weak or missing bone, allowing you to have dental implants placed. Bone from another area of your body, or synthetic bone, is placed in the weakened area. As it heals, new bone growth occurs and increases the strength of the bone.

Sinus Lifts: To successfully place implants in the upper jaw, sometimes additional material is needed. A sinus lift will protect the soft tissues of the sinuses just above the molars and give the posts a solid place to attach securely. Similar to a bone graft, our surgeon will place the graft, then allow it to heal over several months.

Extractions: If you need one or more teeth removed before receiving dental implants, our experienced team can make the process quick and comfortable. Given our surgical expertise, we can often place implants at the same time as an extraction, a so called "immediate implant" can significantly cut down the traditional waiting period of 6 months between extraction and implant placement.

Ailing or Failing Implants: An ailing implant is one that is at risk for failing and needs some kind of treatment to stop failure. Implant failure is rare, but if your implant becomes loose and extremely painful, it may need re-treatment. We are experienced in resolving various implant issues using dental lasers and always try to use the least invasive option possible for your health and comfort.

Do I Need an Implant or Bridge?

There are advantages and disadvantages to all options for replace missing teeth. There are also individual differences in every case that can make one option better than another. The significant advantages of dental implants are that they preserve the jaw bone and adjacent teeth. After examining your unique case, we can advise you if a tooth can be saved, and if not, all the pros and cons of your tooth replacement options.

Does Getting an Implant Hurt?

Dental implant surgery is a predictable and safe dental procedure when performed by an experienced implant surgeon. A local anesthetic will numb the surgical area first to ensure maximum comfort.

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and bruising of the face, which peaks about three days afterward. This discomfort can be managed with a combination of Advil and Tylenol. Rest assured, our team will thoroughly review the pre- and post-operative instructions that will help with a speedy recovery!

Will You Put Me Out?

At Langley Perio & Implants, we also offer the option of intravenous conscious sedation, where an IV placed into your arm delivers a sedative into your bloodstream. Your level of consciousness is reduced so you become less aware of the procedure being completed, and most patients have little to no memory of the surgery afterwards.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Dental implants in Langley, BCFrom the placement of the dental implant to the final restoration is an average of four months. This is the amount of time it takes for osseointegration to occur. Factors that can affect the amount of time required, include infection or deficiency of the bone, systemic risk factors such as diabetes or smoking, and if a tooth needs to be extracted before an implant can be placed.

Our periodontist can let you know if you are a candidate for an immediate implant or restoration, as well as the pros and cons of these options. Even if you have a traditional implant procedure, you will have a temporary tooth until you get your final restoration.

How Much Does An Implant Cost?

The total cost for an implant will depend upon the specific site, the amount of bone, the type of final restoration, and your overall dental health. Implant treatments can range from under $4,000 to well over $25,000. Given that variability, it is essential to understand what steps are necessary to achieve your optimal results.

Although an implant's initial cost could be higher than the alternatives, the restoration's longevity can make it the most economical option in the long-term.
