Have you ever woken up with a headache or tired facial muscles because you have been grinding or clenching your teeth all night?
I used to wake up with sore jaws, headaches and general stiffness in my face and neck. I know I am a grinder! Periods of stress, lack of sleep or changes in your lifestyle can make it worse, but I know for myself that I have been doing this for many years, and it has never gone away! I am literally grinding down (making holes) in my night guards and retainers.
I looked at other treatment options and found out about therapeutic injections of botulinum toxin (yes, Botox) to release the muscles that cause grinding and clenching. After witnessing the benefits myself, I became trained in incorporating this as part of my own practice as a Periodontist. Having witnessed the same results for many patients like me, I want to spread the word to help others that might be experiencing the same.
To address occlusal trauma or occlusal overload is an important part of a comprehensive periodontal treatment plan. Too much force on your teeth can cause premature tooth wear, jaw joint issues (TMD), tooth fracture, tooth structure loss (abfraction defects), increased attachment loss, tooth mobility, and tooth loss.
