PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) is not only a natural way to help promote healing, but it also speeds up the entire process. It has been proven to heal wounds to a much greater extent than had the wound been left to heal independently.
There are several good reasons to use it in dentistry. The antibacterial properties make this biologic great for almost every kind of surgical procedure. It decreases postoperative bleeding as well as reduces the risk of infection.
I use PRF in different ways (jelly form, plug, membrane, sticky bone, injectable) every day in my practice, and I have seen so many great results, so continue to use it.
Here are some of the application I like to use PRF for:
- Combined with a dental implant
- Placed into the tooth extraction site
- Protect the site where we take the gum from for a gingival graft
- As a donor tissue for gum rejuvenation
- Papilla growth
- All regenerative procedures such as bone grafting and sinus grafting surgery
- Combined with other biologic materials for improved handling and mechanical properties
PRF is a natural surgical additive, which carries low risks and provides excellent results. PRF is suitable to be used alone as well as in combination with other biomaterials.
Coming soon, a video of my favourite application of PRF in bone grafting!
