If your gums bleed when you brush or floss it is NOT normal and should be treated! Healthy gums don’t bleed! Dental plaque on your teeth can cause gingivitis, which is reversible with proper brushing and flossing every day. If not treated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis (bone loss around your teeth) which is irreversible and can lead to tooth loss.
Don’t wait any longer! If you notice your gums are red, swollen, sensitive and/or bleed, it is time to make some changes to your oral hygiene routine.
Contrary to what some people may think, don’t avoid brushing or flossing because your gums are bleeding. It should be a warning sign that your gums need more attention! That means better flossing! After a few days of good home care, bleeding should resolve, if not, make an appointment with your dentist for a checkup!
